Write about something that you believed as a child.

Prompt Response:  I used to believe that this one guy who is a really close friend to my dads side of the family was my uncle. Actually there were a couple guys that would be invited to the family functions that were very close to us. They were always the cool guys to me when I was young that would have fun and mess with us. One of them is really rich, he co-owns a construction company, but when we got older he would take us for joy rides in his 1970 Corvette.  Summary: We are doing vocab and ethos pathos, logos. Reflection:  I learned some new vocab words.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

Prompt Response:  When I was little I was always scared of roller coasters. I never wanted to go on them mostly because I was scared of heights. My brother convinced me to go on Gallioth with him and once I did it I loved it and now I really like roller coasters. It is one of those situations where you just gotta do it before you hate on it. Summary: We worked on claims. Reflection:  I learned how to identify different types of claims in text.

As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

Prompt Response:  I think that obvious answer here is politics. As we get older politics become more  impactful and relevant. This means you start to talk about them more with more diverse groups of people. Like when you were younger maybe you used to talk about that stuff with your parents and then when you become a teen maybe you start talking about it with your friends more too. And by the time you are an adult it is a big defining factor in your life.   Summary: We talked about types of claims. Reflection:  I learned that there are three types of claims.

Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

Prompt Response:  A truth I was afraid to except was when my last dog died. I was playing a soccer tournament and it was pouring rain. We went somewhere to eat and warm-up. I remember my mom walking over to me to brake the news. I think it was really hard for me to accept it because I was away from home and my dog so it didn't really feel real. We did end up winning the tournament though which is good, and we played a team in the finals that was an age group above us.  Summary: We talked about Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Reflection: I learned about how to make a good argument.

Write about a time when you were judged unfairly.

Prompt Response:  I feel like everyone can relate to this but I was judged back when I was really young because adults would assume you being a kid wouldn't know what you were talking about or that you would be wrong. I do not remember the exact event but I just remember being really mad that my older cousin would not believe me and I knew I was right but it didn't matter. Maybe they were just messing with me who knows.  Summary: I did the common lit. Reflection:  I learned more about how fear can be used to help a narrative.

Imagine you are learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the very first time. What would you be curious to know about the traditions, foods, music, or celebrations?

Prompt Response:  I think that I would be curious about all of it. I would want to know what they eat and what they celebrate, and how they express themselves through the arts. Although I think I would be most interested in food because of it's potential. I could discover a whole new type of quinine that I really like and start eating all the time. I really like trying new foods and finding new things I like.   Summary: More thesis work Reflection:  I learned about umbrella thesis statements.

After viewing your classmates’ poem posters, select one presentation that caught your attention. Describe what you enjoyed about it or something new you learned from their work.

Prompt Response:  I was not in class for the presentations because I have been sick. I am sure that everyone was very creative and made the posters look very good. The presentations in this class tend to be well done for the most part.  Summary: Out Sick Reflection:  Out Sick

In “The Interlopers” by Saki, Ulrich and Georg view each other as interlopers, outsiders intruding on their land and their lives. Think about a time when you felt like an interloper or when someone else felt out of place in your world. How did that situation affect relationships, emotions, or outcomes?

Prompt Response:  A time I felt like an interloper was when I came to lakeside because where I went to middle school was very far from here so I didn't know that many people. Having to get myself into friend groups at first felt like I was out of place. I don't like having to go through that, I don't think anyone does, but you need to and it is an important skill in life. The only effect it really had was making me try harder to be apart of whatever group because I didn't want to be in that spot anymore.  Summary: I did the common lit. Reflection:  I learned about human/nature relationships and how they can be told in a story.

Of today’s 15 vocabulary words, which three do you think you will use the most in your speaking and writing this semester? Explain why each word feels useful or powerful to you.

Prompt Response:  My first word that I think I might use is amoral. I really like it because I feel like we often read stories that have people in them that are amoral and it is a great word to describe them. My next word is affluence. This one is good for me because I don't really have another word in my vocab that is able to describe rich people, other than being rich. My last word is amorphous. Mostly just because I like how it sounds and I want to start using it more often.  Summary: I was at home sick. Reflection:  I was at home sick.

It’s Homecoming Week! 🎉 What do you love most about being part of the Lakeside community? How do you show off your school spirit? What is your favorite Homecoming tradition or event?

Prompt Response:  I like mostly being with my friends and hanging out with people but the football games are really fun and I think that the student section does a good job on home games. Especially for homecoming. I try to do the themes for each day like neon, or jersey day, or whatever it is. Today I am wearing a neon shirt for the homecoming day.    Summary: We took a test and worked on our poems. Reflection:  I am learning how to record my voice and put in on Adobe Express.

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on actvities. Select one and tell why.

Prompt Response:  I think that hands-on activities are the best for learning. I say this because worksheets are very boring and do not really engage the student very much. Nobody wants to do a packet. Class discussions are better but it is hard for everyone to do work and learn when you are just talking about something as a group. I think that it is hard to remember things when all you do is talk about them. I think that hands on activities are the most engaging and also you are able to remember and retain information better. Maybe that is just me though because that is how I learn best.  Summary: I finished my poem and started my poster. Reflection:  I learned how to make a voice over in Adobe express.

Which aspect of creating a poem do you enjoy the most? Tell what it is and explain why.

Prompt Response:  I really liked coming up with the beginning part because after that it was easier to build off of it. I think that once you get the subject and the basic idea of the poem down it flows out a lot easier. I think that I may change my poem a little bit though because I do not like how it is right now. I think I could make it longer and maybe add some similes or personification.  Summary: We worked on making a poem. Reflection:  I am learning how to construct my own poem.

After reading Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "Constantly Risking Absurdity," which explores the poet's daring craft, write about your most absurd personal experience. Describe a single, specific incident that felt ridiculously bold or foolish. Ensure your response is vivid, concise, and captures the essence of absurdity.

Prompt Response:  A personal experience that I have had that was absurd was when I was driving home a couple weeks ago from school. Everything was normal and I was about half way home and I was pulling up to multiple intersections. I had three green lights ahead of me so I kept going straight because I had the right of way. As I glanced across the road I saw a car pull up from a side street looking to merge into traffic. I didn't think much of it because I was going fast enough for it to be impossible for them to make the gap. But they decided to gun it and they did miss the gap and ended up slamming into the side of me. I tried to swerve but there was no time. After that I stopped on the road and they ran from the crime scene.  Summary: We analyzed another poem.  Reflection:  I learned how comparison can be used in poetry.

You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?

Prompt Response:  I would describe my life with a song right now it would be, Sun is Shining by Bob Marley because I feel like I am just floating through life. I try to think that I do not have many worries in my life because the ones that I do in comparison are not that important compared to others. I have to worry about grades and a homecoming date, not whether I'm going to eat tonight or not. I try to remind myself that my life is pretty good so even when I do have problems its not so bad.  Summary: We took a test and finished our poem analysis. Reflection:  I learned what a slant rhyme is.

If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

Prompt Response:  I would write a poem about hard work and effort. I think that in life the things that you least want to do like studying, or working out, or eating healthy, are the most beneficial for you. I think that I try to have a good balance of these things in life so that I still can have fun and do what I want in life. I would say that the overall message for me would be to always work hard so your future is easier. Summary: We did more work on poetry. Reflection:  I am learning more and more about Emily Dickinson's writing style.

Describe one thing that makes you different from other people.

Prompt Response:  Something that makes me different from a lot of people is that I am tall. I'm not that tall but compared to the average person my age I am usually taller or as tall as them. I do not know why because my mom is not that tall. My dad is also not that tall but my brother is. Maybe those height genes skipped a generation because my moms dad is very tall. He is still taller than me and he is 80 something. He's very old.  Summary: Learning more about poems and how to analyze them. Reflection:  I learned about the complexities of Emily Dickinson poems.

You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

Prompt Response:  I think that the class has gone pretty well so far. I think that it is designed to be very manageable so that you do not get overwhelmed. I like the projects that we have done so far they are very fun to do and I like the creative aspects of them. I would much rather make projects then write papers all class.  I think that we have gone over interesting topics, some of it was boring but every class has that. It is not that hard you just need to keep due dates in mind and don't make silly mistakes. Summary: We analyzed more Emily Dickinson poems, then started on a project. Reflection:  I am becoming proficient in analyzing poems, but I feel that it is subjective how you interpret literature so making that in a test would not be fair.
