As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

Prompt Response:   Things in the class were mostly okay. The work we did sometimes felt good to finish. I connected well with some of the ideas presented during our time together. I think I need to improve on a specific kind of skill going forward. I will focus on that one thing next time. Summary: We had a very short class today Reflection:  We just reviewed.

Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

Prompt Response:   We eat a special hot dip on Christmas Eve. We call this dip fondue. We stick food like bread and apples onto long forks and dip them into the melted cheese or chocolate. This simple party happens right before the big holiday. It still matters to us because it makes our family feel close and happy when we are all together. Summary: Im not sure I was home sick Reflection:  Home Sick

How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

Prompt Response:  I think that they have lost their magic. Christmas and Halloween when we were like 10 and 12 was amazing. That was the peak time to enjoy the holidays. You had pretty much no responsibility and you were at the age where getting a whole bag of candy was amazing. And you had toys that you wanted like a new nerf gun to play with on Christmas. Now candy is just meh, and the gifts are great but for the most part I just want money and some new clothes. Now people just go to parties and you aren't able to enjoy the holidays like before.   Summary: We did vocab Monday  Reflection:  I learned new vocab words.

Write about something you’ve outgrown but still miss.

Prompt Response:  I have outgrown the ability to have a care free, easy life. Now I don't want to say that my life is hard right now because I know compared to others I have it pretty easy. But I mean not having to worry about finals, and grades, and college, and having a job. I wanna go back to the time when I didn't have as many burdens, but sadly its only going to get worse from here. Summary: We took a vocab test and analyzed a poem. Reflection:  I learned about limitations on our rights.

Write about something that you can't stop thinking about.

Prompt Response:  Right now I cant stop thinking about finals and trying to get good grades in all my classes. It is hard to not think about it sense finals are coming up in the next week and I just have been doing a lot of studying. There are some classes that I need to to more prep work in like math and APUSH compared to physics and American Lit. I think that I will do good though. Summary: We went to the councilors today to chose electives. Reflection:  I leaned that I switched councilors.

My Cultural Mask

Image
Summary: Today we all presented our cultural masks. I really liked everyone's  I think they looked really good. Reflection: I learned a lot about where my class mates are from.

After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

Prompt Response:  Everyone has similar masks, and they all hangout in groups of people with similar masks. If your mask is different you are an outcast. It is hard to discover who you are if you are always pretending to fit in and trying to be something your not. A moment that stood out to me was when the girl took off her mask and that shocked everyone. In all of these examples, the poem, the short film, and my mask, they are all centered around being proud of who you are and not being ashamed of it. It's ok to not fit in sometimes. I just want my mask to show that I am proud to be an American. Summary: I worked on my mask Reflection:  I saw a short film.

In “I, Too,” the speaker expresses pride in his identity and his rightful place in America. Reflect on your own life: What aspect of your cultural identity are you most proud of, and why?

Prompt Response:  I am most proud to be American. I am also German and Polish but I am more American than either. I think that America is a great place to live and have a family regardless of your political views it could be a lot worse. People die trying to get to America and so I think that if you live here you should be very thankful that you do.  Summary: We analyzed more poetry Reflection:  I learned a new poem called "I Too"

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?

Prompt Response:  A time that I did something that something that was "cool" was when I was speeding and a cop flashed his lights at me to slow down. I now realize that it is very bad and dangerous. I should not speed. I could die way to soon if I do speed. My brother did it a lot and so i decided to but shouldn't have. Summary: We did more poem work. Reflection:  I learned a new poem.

Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Prompt Response:  I felt most thankful that I was able to see all my family. Also for the good food and being fortunate enough to have a house and car. And also having enough money to by new clothes. And not have been born in India. And having my dog. As well as the cold whether.  Summary: We did vocab work Reflection:  I learned new vocab words.
